The NC State's women's soccer team (5-3-1, 0-0-1) will face #23 Maryland (7-3-0, 1-1-0) on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in College Park, Md. NC State is still seeking its first conference victory in 2002 after tying No.7 Wake Forest, 1-1 on Sunday, Sept. 29.
NC State thumped the visiting Panthers of High Point, 5-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Sophomore Annika Schmidt headed in the first goal off an assist from junior Lindsey Underwood in the fourth minute. Underwood would tally the second goal just three minutes later, with help from seniors Erin Bushey and Lauren Bendahan. Schmidt headed in her second goal of the game, assisted by Underwood and senior Adrienne Barnes. Senior Jordan Allison tallied her fourth goal of the season with help from fellow seniors Colette Seville and Rachel Durr. Barnes recorded the final goal of the afternoon with assists coming from junior Katherine Warman and Underwood. Senior Gretchen Lear earned her third shutout of the season.
NC State tied the No.7 Demon Deacons of Wake Forest, 1-1 in a double overtime match at Method Road Soccer Stadium, Sunday, Sept. 29. Barnes notched the lone Wolfpack goal in the fourth minute. Senior Lindsey Rosen slipped the ball to Schmidt who then lofted the ball into the Wake Forest penalty area. Barnes headed the ball past Deacon goalie Erin Regan. But Wake Forest struck back in the 57th minute with a goal from junior Katherine Winstead. On a breakaway, Winstead lifted the ball over a charging Lear. The ball rolled into the empty Wolfpack net. Both teams had plenty of opportunities to take the lead but neither could find the back of the net, even after two sudden-victory overtimes. NC State is the only team this season to hold the Deacons to just one goal. Barnes was named ACC Co-Player of the Week for her performance against High Point and Wake Forest.
Maryland defeated No.22 Duke, 3-2 for its first conference victory on Friday, Sept. 27 in College Park, Md. Junior Lindsey Givens put the Terrapins up early when her long throw-in went through the hands of Duke keeper Thora Helgadottir. Duke answered back in the 38th minute to tie the game 1-1. Junior Kate Ludwig took back the lead for the Terps in the 58th minute when she beat three Duke defenders and the keeper. Maryland was awarded a penalty kick in the 66th minute, when Ludwig was taken down in the box by a Duke defender. Senior Kim King put the ball past Helgadottir for the game-winner. In the 73rd minute, Duke cut the lead to 3-2, slipping the ball into the Terp net amid confusion in the penalty area. Duke had several more opportunities to tie, but Maryland managed to hold on for the win.
Maryland defeated visiting William & Mary, 1-0 for their third consecutive victory on Sunday, Sept. 29. Freshman Mallory Mahar netted the lone goal for the Terps in the 69th minute. Freshman Kimmy Francis floated a corner kick into the penalty area, which Mahar headed home for the score. Maryland outshot William & Mary 24-7 and took 13 corner kicks to the Tribe's one. Maryland keeper Mariel Wilner earned her first career shutout in the match.
This will be the 20th meeting between NC State and Maryland. NC State leads the series 11-4-4. Maryland won the last meeting, 2-0 on October 28, 2001 at Method Road Soccer Stadium.
