For the next few Monday's, NC State's Department of Athletics and Newspapers in Education will focus on character traits. Each week the Raleigh News and Observer will spotlight a different trait and an NC State student-athlete who has exhibited that trait. Senior soccer player Adrienne Barnes was featured in the article on Monday, October 28.
Week 5: Responsibility
Responsibility is being dependable in carrying out obligations and duties. It is being accountable for your own actions and being committed to active involvement in your community.

Barnes is a pre-vet science major. Each Thursday she has to miss practice because she has class that is required for her degree. She takes it upon herself to schedule her own practice with the coaches to go over what she will miss. Barnes feels that this is important because she gets one-on-one time with the coach and it is not fair to her teammates for her to miss practice. She uses her session to get in extra fitness training and weight training and anything else that she misses due to her class conflict. Being the responsible person that she is, many times Barnes does things on her own when the coaches are not available. She wants to make sure that she is not resting when the rest of the team is training.
Barnes credits her ability to be responsible to the fact that she manages her time well. The time not spent on the soccer field she uses to do homework and to study. This is evident by her performance in the class room. A well-rounded athlete Barnes has a 3.382 cumulative GPA in Pre-Veterinary Science and has been honored as a NC State Scholar-Athlete, an All-South Region Scholar Athlete , an ACC Honor Role student, and a Dean's List student. Off the field, she is involved with many school and community activities including: volunteering as a "Big Sister" at the YMCA program "Big Brothers/Big Sisters", volunteering at SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a member of SAAC (Students of African American Culture), and ImPACK.
