Stanford, CA - Justin Walter continues to play consistent rounds of golf as the unquestioned leader of one of the best golf programs in the nation. The senior, who notched All-American and All-ACC honors after a breakthrough first season in NCAA golf, is tied for 12th place at the event where he took top honors a year ago. Walters, the native of South Africa, paces the Wolfpack at the Nelson Invitational with a one-under-par 70. Walters fired a first round 70 at last years Nelson before closing with back-to-back 68s to notch the first of two individual wins in 2001-02. Dan Porter of Washington took the early first round lead with a blistering 64 on the 6,786 yard, par 71 layout.
Senior Jason Moon looks impressive after a first round 73 leaves him in the hunt and in a tie for 34th.
Two emerging sophomores turned in impressive performances for the young Wolfpack. Rodney Thomas is tied for 44th with a 74, while Thomas Strange chipped in a solid showing with a 76, good for 65th.
Kyle Tucker, a senior from Raleigh, made his first career appearance for the Wolfpack by firing a 79. He is holding steady in 86th.
The second round continues tomorrow as the Wolfpack looks to better their fourth place finish at the Nelson Invitational last year.
