Track Competes at Blue Heaven Rumble

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The NC State track & field team traveled over to the University of North Carolina, where the 2001 Indoor ACC Championships will be held, and competed in the Blue Heaven Rumble this past weekend.
Senior Katie Bolac set a school record in the pole vault for the second straight week. Bolac finished second with a top mark of 12'00", breaking her own school record by less than an inch. Also in the pole vault, freshman Teresa Reed was 16th (10'06"). Kristen Pace returned after missing most of last season with an injury, and finished sixth in the high jump with a leap of 5'08". Sophomore Desiree Mittman was 19th in the triple jump (37'05").
Sophomore Kelly Smoke notched a top-10 finish as well, placing 10th in the weight throw with a top throw of 52'00.50". Smoke also finished 14th in the shot put with a mark of 43'07.75".
In the sprints, sophomore Felicia Fant placed 10th in the finals of the 60 meters with a time of 7.71, after running a qualifying time of 7.66. Freshman Ebony Foster also ran in the 60 meters, placing 30th (7.88). Fant also ran in the 200 meters, placing 22nd with a time of 25.57. Senior Renae Robinson had a strong showing in the 400 meters, brining home a 10th place finish in 57.79, while Foster was 49th (1:00.79). In the 60 meter hurdles, Adrienne Vinson was 35th (9.36), and Krystal Neely was 37th (9.44).
NC State only ran a few distance runners on the day. Transfer Kara Price was 14th (5:10.62) in the mile, while Renn Watkins was 27th (5:24.10). In the 3,000 meters, it was Abigail Nelkie placing 22nd (10:48.74) and Rebecca Hoover was 25th (10:53.77). Karen Medlin (2:25.63) and Karen Sykes (2:27.21) each ran in the 800 meters.
On the men's side, senior Tyrone Dozier captured first place in the 200 meters running a 21.88. Fellow senior Joseph Brent also ran in the 200 meters, placing ninth (22.22). Brent also brought home a 14th place finish in the 60 meters with a time of 7.01, after running a 6.87 in the qualifying round. Also in the 60 meters, Dozier took 56th (7.13). In the men's 400 meters, Derrick High was 17th (50.03) and Monterrio Adams was 20th (50.17).
Just like the women's team, the Wolfpack only sent a few men to run in the distance races. Senior Chris Dugan won the mile with a time of 4:10.83, just four seconds away from a NCAA provisional time. Fellow senior Ryan Woods also ran well in the mile, placing third with a time of 4:12.82. In the 3,000 meters, Nick Mangum was seventh (8:38.15).
The men's squad was well represented in the weight throw, placing three in the top-15. James Rowell was the Pack's top finisher placing 10th with a heave of 54'01.75". Rowell was followed by Randy Cass in 12th (53'05") and Ryan Furlough in 14th (52'04.50").
In the high jump, Brandon Brown recorded a 10th place finish with a leap of 6'05", and in the triple jump Jason Vieira placed ninth (46'05.50").
NC State will compete next weekend at the George Mason Invitational.
