Raleigh, N.C. - After holding a narrow one-point lead at halftime, Virginia ran away from NC State in the second half for a 68-52 victory and its first ACC win of the season. The Cavaliers (8-5, 1-1) were led by the freshman combination of LaTonya Blue and Brandi Teamer. Blue scored a career-high 26 points on 11 of 15 shooting from the floor. Teamer connected on 11 of 17 shots for 25 points to go along with her game-high nine rebounds.
"We didn't have a great defensive night or a great offensive night," said NC State coach Kay Yow.
With just over eight minutes remaining in the contest, Virginia held a seven point lead and then went on an 11-2 run to seal its first conference victory. The Wolfpack lost its shooting touch in the second half, managing only 29.2 percent from the floor after connecting on 46.4 percent in the first half.
"It's really frustrating," said Yow. "We would miss easy shots and it would deflate us. We did a good job of working the ball inside and then didn't convert."
Sophomore center Kaayla Chones came off the bench to lead the Wolfpack with 13 points and five rebounds. Carisse Moody was NC State's only other double-figure scorer with 10. The Wolfpack fall to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in ACC play.
Virginia shot 52.9 percent for the game. The Cavaliers also won the battle of the boards, 31-29 and forced the Wolfpack into 19 turnovers.
NC State will host Georgia Tech on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum.
