Raleigh, N.C. - As NC State prepares to begin fall practice next week, many former Wolfpack players are competing hard in NFL training camps around the country.
Both Torry Holt and Ray Agnew helped the St. Louis Rams win the Super Bowl two seasons ago. Holt had a breakout year last season for the high octane offense of the Rams, becoming one of the top receivers in the NFL. Holt led the league with 1,635 receiving yards, and grabbed a total of 82 passes with six going for touchdowns. Agnew begins his fourth season with the Rams and 12th overall. Over his career Agnew had played in 157 games and registered 22.5 sacks, including starting 15 games last season and posting four sacks.
Another wide receiver looking to make a big impact this year is second-year man Chris Coleman with the Tennessee Titans. Coleman played 16 games a year ago, mostly on special teams. His biggest game came in the playoffs against the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens when he blocked two punts. This past spring, Coleman starred in NFL Europe leading the league in receiving yards (710) and touchdowns (8) while catching 51 passes.
NC State had always produced good defensive backs, and right now five former DBs are in training camp. Dewayne Washington just recently signed a new five year deal to stay with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Washington will begin his fourth season with the Steelers, after starting all 16 games a year ago and recording five interceptions. The former NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, has started 110 games in his NFL career. Jason Perry missed most of last season with injury, but will be looking to comeback strong for the San Diego Chargers. Tony Scott was drafted by the NY Jets last season, and played in all 16 games as a rookie.
Heading to camp for the first time this season are four members of last year's NC State squad. Wide Receiver Koren Robinson was taken by the Seattle Seahawks with the ninth overall pick, and just inked a six year contract worth $10.1 million. Safety Adrian Wilson was picked in the third round by the Arizona Cardinals, and agreed to terms on a three year deal. Tackle Jarvis Borum will join Wilson in Arizona after he signed a free agent contract, as did linebacker Clayton White with the NY Giants.
Also vying for a job in the NFL are running back Rahshon Spikes (Cleveland Browns), tight end Mark Thomas (Kansas City Chiefs), tackle Ian Rafferty (Tennessee Titans), tackle George Hegamin (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) running back Gary Downs (Atlanta Falcons) defensive end Mark Thomas (Indianapolis Colts), wide receiver Alvis Whitted (Jacksonville Jaguars), and cornerback Lloyd Harrison (Washington Redskins).
