Although he was defeated in the second round of match play on July 4, NC State golfer Jason Moon will be able to walk away from this year's North-South Amateur Golf Championship with his head held high.
Earlier in the week, Moon put together a remarkable performance in winning stroke play qualifying by four shots. After firing a two-under par 69 at Pinehurst's famed No. 2 course in Monday's first round, the Wolfpack junior tied a course record by carding an eight-under par 64 at Pinehurst No. 8 on Tuesday. His 10-under par score for the two days placed him four strokes ahead of Lee Williamson and Brandt Snedeker.
In the opening round of match play on July 4, Moon eased past Michael Barbosa of St. Petersburg, Fla., 5-4. But in the afternoon round, he was eliminated by Chad Wilfong, who finished one up.
NC State's David Sanchez advanced to the quarterfinals by posting a pair of victories on Wednesday. In the morning round, he topped Bret Guetz 2 and 1. Sanchez then came back with a 3 and 2 victory over defending champion David Eger in the afternoon.
Match play in the 101st North-South Amateur continues Thursday at Pinehurst No. 2.
