Former NC State soccer stars Charmaine Hooper and Kim Yankowski squared off in a WUSA showdown last night. Yankowski's Carolina Courage defeated Hooper's Atlanta Beat 3-2. Carolina has handed Atlanta its only two losses this season.
Hooper, a forward, tied the score a 2 in the 73rd minute when she was fouled in the penatly area by Courage defender Staci Wilson. Hooper then calmly hammered the Beat's first penalty kick in their history into the lower left corner of the net. The goal was Hooper's seventh and gave her the team lead in points with 17.
Yankowski, a midfielder, came on as a sub late in the match but would figure prominently in its outcome. Yankowski chased down a ball near the right sideline in the 88th minute and sent a beautiful crossing pass to Hege Riise for the game-winning tally. It was Yankowski's second assist of the season.
Despite the loss, Atlanta (8-2-7) remained in first place with 31 points, while Carolina (6-9-2, 20 points) forged into the playoff picture with the victory.
