It's unusual for an athlete from NC State to feel at home when participating in a game or an event at Duke, but this week's NCAA Men's Golf Championships should be an exception to that rule.
This week's tournament, which begins on Wednesday May 30, will be played on the classic Duke University Golf Course, designed by famed architect Robert Trent Jones. The 7,045 layout, which was recently redesigned by Rees Jones (son of Robert Trent), will offer up no major surprises for the Wolfpack. Not only have NC State's players seen the Duke course many times, they also have a history of playing well there. Last fall, the Pack defeated 18 teams in route to winning the annual Duke Fall Classic.
Seeded sixth in the championship, the Wolfpack will be paired in a block of tee times with players from the University of Oklahoma and the University of Arizona when play begins on Wednesday.
NC State may have established itself as a possible dark horse pick when it recently came home second at the NCAA East Regional. It was during that outing that the Wolfpack finished ahead of Georgia, Georgia Tech and Clemson--the teams ranked 1, 2 and 3 in the latest national polls.
Leading the Pack into this week's championship will be All-ACC selections David Sanchez and Chris Mundorf. Mark Tullo, Jason Moon and Garth Mulroy round out a balanced five-man team that is capable of contending for the title.
In 29 years under the direction of four time ACC Coach of the Year Richard Sykes, NC State has competed in the NCAA Tournament 25 times. The Pack has twice finished as high as eighth (1982 & '95) in the NCAA Championship. This year's squad, however, has a very realistic chance of breaking that school mark.
NC State's Tee Times for Wednesday's First Round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship at the Duke University Golf Course in Durham:
12:18 Jason Moon
12:27 Mark Tullo
12:36 Garth Mulroy
12:45 Chris Mundorf
12:54 David Sanchez
***NC State will be paired with players from Oklahoma and Arizona. The groups will begin their rounds on hole #1.
