Hunter Joins Wolfpack Staff

Raleigh, NC -- NC State men's basketball coach Herb Sendek has announced that Larry Hunter, the former head coach at Ohio University, has joined the Wolfpack staff as an assistant coach. Hunter, who has served as a head coach for 25 years, posts an overall record of 509-224, and ranked as the 16th-winningest active coach in the country at the conclusion of last season.
"We are elated to have a coach with the national stature, integrity, and long-time success of Larry Hunter joining our staff here at NC State," said Sendek. "His wealth of experience and habits of excellence will surely pay great dividends in all aspects of our program."
Hunter, who has made 12 NCAA tournament appearances as a head coach, has posted winning records in 23 of his 25 years in that capacity.
He spent the last 12 years at Ohio University, where he was the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in 1993-94 after winning the regular season and tournament titles. He coached 16 All-MAC performers, five conference players of the year and four first-team Academic All-MAC selections at Ohio. Twenty-eight of the the 34 players he coached at Ohio graduated and he posts an overall graduation rate of 85%. Last season, the Bobcats were 19-11, with a 12-6 mark in MAC competition, and his overall record with the Bobcats was 204-148.
"I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to join Coach Sendek at North Carolina State," said Hunter. "He is highly respected in the coaching profession and he has NC State basketball poised to achieve many significant goals. Having known him for many years, I have great respect for him as a person and as a coach. I am looking forward to working with him and his staff."
From 1976-89, Hunter was the head coach at Wittenberg University. During his 13 years in that position, his team turned in a 305-76 record and made four NCAA Division III Final Four appearances. The Wittenberg squad won the national title in 1977 and was the National Runner-up in 1983.
Hunter, who worked as an assistant coach at Marietta College from 1971-73, graduated from Ohio in 1971 with a B.S. in education. He earned his master's in physical education in 1973.
Hunter will concentrate his coaching activities on campus for the upcoming season, while assistant coaches Larry Harris and Mark Phelps will undertake off-campus recruiting efforts with Sendek.
