Gymnastics Places Sixth at NCAA Regional Championships

Brown Finishes Second on Vault
Gainesville, Fla. -- The NC State women¹s gymnastics team came home with a sixth place finish and a team score of 193.500 at the 2001 NCAA Southeast Regional held at Florida Saturday night. No. 2 Georgia (197.775) and No. 12 Florida (196.650) each advanced to the NCAA Championships by finishing first and second respectively. EAGL rival Maryland placed third (195.850), followed by George Washington in fourth (194.675), and No. 14 Iowa was fifth (193.775).
After having a bye during the first rotation, NC State started its night off on bars. Junior Laura Jazab got the Pack off to a fast start by posting what would be NC State¹s top score on bars, a 9.8. For her efforts, Jazab captured 14th place. Following Jazab, sophomore Cara Dougherty scored a 9.75 for 18th place and classmate Stephanie Southard scored a 9.65. Junior Kelli Brown closed the event strong, with a 9.75 and tied for 18th place. NC State was in sixth place after one event with a team score of 48.275.
NC State¹s second event of the night was beam, the Pack¹s top event on the season. The NCAA Regional meet was no different, as the Pack posted its highest team score of the night, a 48.725. Senior Sara Dolan led the way with a score of 9.825 and captured 11th place. Classmate Monica Berry had a 9.75, as did sophomore Angie Welch each tying for 20th place.The Pack¹s third senior Kara Charles posted a 9.725, and Jazab had a 9.675. After a strong effort on beam, NC State surpassed Iowa and moved into fifth place by more than a full point with a team score of 97.000.
Following another bye, NC State moved over to floor. Dougherty started the event off with a score of 9.725 and captured 31st place. Freshman Molly Pennington turned in a good performance right after Dougherty with her score of 9.675. Brown had the Pack¹s top score on floor, a 9.75 for 27th place. After floor, NC State fell behind Iowa by just 0.075 of a point.
The Pack¹s final event was vault, and produced NC State¹s top individual result. Brown recorded a career-high 9.925 on vault and finished in a tie for second place. That score is also the top mark on vault for NC State this season, and the third-highest in school history. Southard also performed well in front of her hometown crowd with a 9.725 for 23rd place. Charles and sophomore Adina Stock each posted a 9.675, and freshman Alison Bundy had a 9.6.
In the all-around, Kelli Brown notched a score of 38.925 for 11th place, and Kara Charles posted a 37.925 and finished 20th.
