Baseball Sends UNCG To Third Straight Baseball Loss, 11-6

NC State chased UNCG starter Nick Lockhart after just one-third of an inning and moved on to an 11-6 victory to send the Spartans to their third straight loss April 7 at home.
Lockhart (4-4) gave up five straight runs with one out in the first, beginning with an RBI double to left by Brian Wright and followed by a two-run double by Jamey Shearin, a single and an error by Justin Riley, and an RBI double by Joe Gaetti.
Chris Cloninger came on in relief for UNCG (17-15) with the score 5-0 and gave up a single, an RBI double, a groundout RBI, and a walk before getting Wright to ground out to first to end the inning.
Thirteen Wolfpack batters came to the plate in the inning.
UNCG scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 8-3 on an error by shortstop Jeremy Dutton, a groundout to second, and a wild pitch by State starter Dan D'Amato (4-4).
Cloninger settled down after the first inning, holding the Pack to single runs in the second, sixth and seventh before being pulled in the seventh for Ted Toler.
The Spartans pulled within 9-6 on Jesse Martin's towering two-run home run to left field in the fifth, but NC State added their runs in the sixth and seventh to hold on to the lead.
Cloninger finished with four runs on six hits and three strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Toler allowed one hit in 1.2 innings, and Taft Cable was perfect in one inning.
Chad Hayes led UNCG at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance and an RBI. Doug Schutt and Chris Mittendorf each had two hits.
Shearin finished with three doubles to lead NC State (18-16). He was 3-for-4 on the night and had three RBI and two runs. Dutton was 3-for-5 with two RBI and Riley and Daniel Pruitt each had two hits.
D'Amato earned the win with a career-high 10 strikeouts. He gave up all six runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings. Corey Mattison earned his second save of the season, pitching three perfect innings of relief.
UNCG will host High Point April 8 at 1 pm.
