Wolfpack Downs Maryland 5-1 Behind Shearin, McKee

With the win, the Wolfpack improved to 20-17 overall and 6-7 in the ACC. Maryland fell to 10-22 and 2-10. McKee (3-2) walked two and tied his career high with eight strikeouts. Maryland starter Brad Lyons (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out three.
McKee, who stranded 10 runners in his seven innings on the mound, wobbled through the first inning, but did not allow a run, leaving the bases loaded on a single and a pair of walks. The Wolfpack responded with two quick runs in the bottom of the first. Jeremy Dutton led off with a single up the middle and scored on Brian Wright’s first-pitch triple to dead center field. Shearin followed with an infield single to drive in Wright, making it 2-0. Terrapin starter Brad Lyons got out of trouble when Colt Morton popped up for a double play on a hit-and-run play.
Dutton led off the third with a double down the right-field line, took third on a groundout and scored on Shearin’s sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. Shearin added two more RBIs in the bottom of the fifth. Eric Mosely and Dutton drew one-out walks and went to second and third on a wild pitch. Shearin then chopped a single through the middle of the infield, driving in both runners and giving the Wolfpack a 5-0 lead.
That was more than enough for McKee, whose only 1-2-3 inning was the fifth. He left the bases loaded in the first, and stranded two in the fourth and sixth, but did not allow a Maryland baserunner past second base after the first inning. David Hicks retired the Terps in order in the top of the eighth, but Maryland broke up the shutout in the top of the ninth when Sean Lomas led off with a double to the wall in center field, took third on a flyout, and scored on John McCurdy’s two-out line single to center field.
