Yow Named Finalist for Hall of Fame

Springfield, MA -- NC State women's basketball coach Kay Yow has been named a finalist for induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame. There are 17 finalists, seven of which are coaches. The inductees will be voted into the Hall in May and enshrined on Oct. 5, 2001. The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame is located in Springfield, Mass.
Yow ranks fifth on the all-time wins list with 611. She has led NC State to the NCAA Tournament 16 times in the 20-year history of the tournament, including 10 Sweet 16 appearances and a trip to the Final Four in 1998.
Yow has earned numerous coach of the year awards, including Women's Basketball Coach of the Year by College Sports News (1998), Women of the Year In Sport by the National Organization of Women (1988), the Converse/WBCA Coach of the Year (1990), National Coach of the Year by Sports Illustrated For Women (2000) and the John Wooden Coach of the Year Award (2000).
Yow, who is the only women's coach in history to win a Gold Medal at both the Olympics (1988, Seoul) and World Championships (1996), has compiled an amazing 21-1 record in International competition.
Yow, who has been inducted into the Women's Sports Hall of Fame (1988) and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame (2000), began her college coaching career at Elon College in 1972. At Elon, she compiled a 57-19 record, a mark that included two North Carolina state titles.
Other coaching finalists include Lute Olson (Arizona), Mike Krzyzewski (Duke), Larry Brown (UCLA, Boston Celtics), Cathy Rush (Immaculata), John Chaney (Temple) and Jerry Tarkanian (Fresno State). Former players that made the list include Moses Malone, James Worthy, Adrian Dantley and Bobby Jones. Others that have been nominated include Earl Lloyd, Dino Meneghin, Drazen Petrovic, Tex Winter, Grady Lewis and Junius Kellogg.
