BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- North Carolina State scored nine runs in the first three innings and went on to a 10-1 baseball win over Campbell University on Wednesday night at Taylor Field.
The Wolfpack (10-9) was the beneficiary of five Campbell (10-6) errors in the first three frames and scored five unearned runs as a result.
State tallied twice in the first when Jeremy Dutton tripled to lead off the game, then Brian Wright followed with a double. After a passed ball, Sean Walsh drove in Wright on a ground out.
In the second, N.C. State added two runs without a hit on three errors. Justin Riley's two-run triple was the big blow in a five-run Wolfpack third inning. Joe Gaetti's sacrifice fly that scored Jamey Shearin, who earlier had doubled, staked N.C. State to a 10-0 lead in the fifth.
Campbell tallied in the fifth when Bradley Coates, Chris Wiley and Nic Carter strung together one-out singles, then Coates scored on a throwing error. But a pair of ground outs ended the Camel threat.
Wolfpack starter Jason Blanton (1-0) struck out a career-high eight batters in six innings of work and earned the victory by allowing one run on four hits with two walks. Campbell starter Rob Finch (2-3) gave up seven runs (four earned) on four hits in 2 1/3 frames.
Dutton finished with two triples in five at-bats to head the seven-hit N.C. State attack. Coates and Carter each had a pair of singles among CU's eight hits. Campbell's Tony Della Costa went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
N.C. State hosts Florida State in an Atlantic Coast Conference series that begins on Friday. Campbell opens Trans America Athletic Conference play at Samford on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
