NC State Announces Football Signings
2/7/2001 12:00:00 AM | Football
RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 7, 2001) -- NC State head football coach Chuck Amato announced today that 28 student-athletes have signed letters of intent to join the Wolfpack program, including four freshmen who are already enrolled in school at NC State and three junior college transfers. Six of the signees have been ranked among the top 30 nationally at their position by national recruiting services.
"We are really excited about our signing class, at least how they look on paper," said Amato on Wednesday. "We filled all of our needs and signed some very talented young men. I have no doubt that the excitement from last season carried over into recruiting. Winning eight games and being the only ACC team to win a bowl game certainly created a lot of interest in our program. Also, Philip Rivers having such a successful season shows that that we are not afraid to play a true freshman. I think that also had a big impact."
The Wolfpack class is well-balanced, with 15 offensive players and 13 defensive players. The class includes five offensive linemen, four defensive backs, four linebackers, four wide receivers, three running backs, three defensive ends, two defensive down-linemen, two tight ends and a quarterback.
The Wolfpack signed 11 in-state players and a 10 from Florida. Incoming players also represent the states of Maryland, Virginia, Missouri, Alabama and New Jersey.
Running back Tramain Hall (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) graduated from high school in December and is already enrolled at NC State. Hall, who is ranked as the sixth-best running back in the nation by SuperPrep and the nation's fifth-best cornerback by Max Emfinger, tallied 2,066 all-purpose yards last season. Hall will participate in spring workouts, as will offensive linemen Brian Archis and Brandon Moore, who attended Hargrave Military Academy last fall. J.J. Jones, a defensive back from Laurinburg who will also be considered a true freshman next season, recorded 122 tackles in 1999, his senior season at Scotland County High School.
Three junior college transfers are among the signees, defensive ends Terrance Chapman and Shawn Price from L.A. Valley Junior College and defensive tackle Terrance Martin from Hinds Community College in Mississippi. Chapman tallied 90 tackles last season at LA Valley, including 12 sacks, while Price had 62 stops and 16 sacks. Martin's stats last season included 72 tackles and five sacks.
Three of the wide receivers signed by the Pack are ranked among the nation's best, Chapel Hill's Dovonte Edwards, (No. 30 WR nationally by Max Emfinger) and Sterling Hicks of Pompano Beach, Fla., who Emfinger ranks 21st nationally at his position. Chris Murray of Seffner, Fla., is rated as the eighth best flanker in the country. Quarterback Jay Davis of Clearwater, Fla., who is ranked 23rd nationally at his position, threw for over 2,800 yards at Central Cathlolic High School last season, while Greg Golden ranks 19th nationally among defensive backs.
In addition to the signees, tight end Sean Berton will also join the Wolfpack program after transferring from West Virginia University. Berton, who redshirted the 1998 season and played as a reserve in 1999 and 2000, will practice with the squad but will sit out the 2001 season due to the NCAA transfer rule.
"I can't say enough about our coaching staff," Amato continued. "They worked extremely hard and their work ethic in recruiting was everything I could have asked for. I told them not to be afraid to get in a battle with anybody and they weren't. Once we started having some success, it had a snowball effect."
