RALEIGH, N.C. -- Jason Tuttle had three hits and drove in three runs, and Scott Light pitched 7 2/3 strong innings Wednesday at Doak Field to lead Elon to a 9-3 college baseball victory over NC State.
The win lifted Elon to the break-even point for the season at 7-7, while the loss, NC State's fifth in a row, dropped the Pack to 3-7. Light (2-1) allowed three runs on six hits, walked two and struck out three. Wolfpack starter Daniel Caldwell (2-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings. Caldwell walked two and did not have a strikeout.
Caldwell did not have his "A" game and was wobbly from the start, thanks in large part to Tuttle, who led off the game with a bunt single, took second and third on groundouts, and scored on a single to left-center by Whit Bryant. Ryan McBee drew a two-out walk in the top of the second and came around to score when Tuttle drilled a triple off the wall in right-center.
The Phoenix made it 5-0 with three in the top of the third, without Tuttle's help. Shaun Kopczynski led off with a single, and Bryant walked. Morgan Frazier attempted to sacrifice, but first baseman David Hicks fielded the ball quickly and cut down the lead runner at third base for the first out of the inning.
That was the end of the day for Caldwell, who gave way to rekiever Corey Mattison. Mike Hromodka grounded out to move the runners to second and third, and Mattison unloaded a wild pitch to score Bryant and move Frazier to third. Adam Grissom was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and third, and Logan Parsons ripped a double to drive in both runs and give Elon a 5-0 lead.
The Wolfpack got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Brian Wright led off with a walk and scored on Colt Morton's one-out triple off the wall in right. Wright led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, his second of the game, and Sean Walsh was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with none out. This time, David Hicks delivered, driving a one-out double to right-center to score Wright, and Jeremy Dutton chased Walsh home with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Elon got the two runs right back in the top of the seventh. Brian Ingram led off with a solo homer down the right-field line, and Bryant hit a one-out single. Morgan Frazier greeted reliever Mike Sollie with a double, and Bryant scored when the throw from the outfield got away for an error.
Frazier led off the top of the ninth and got hit by a pitch, and John Schaefer drew a one-out walk. McBee loaded the bases by bunting for a two-out single, and Tuttle put the hurt on the Wolfpack one last time, rapping a two-run single to give the Phoenix a six-run cushion at 9-3.
