Cancun, Mexico - Pittsburgh pulled off an 82-65 upset of #18 NC State in the final game of the Torneo de Basquetbol in Cancun. The Panthers improved to 4-7 with the win, while NC State lost its fifth consecutive contest of the season to fall to 6-5.
"We just continue to make too many mistakes - unforced errors at critical times," commented NC State head coach Kay Yow. "We don't have the consistency we need. We need to regroup before heading into ACC play after the holidays."
Pittsburgh jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the first half before the Wolfpack put together a 9-2 run to tie the score at 19. The lead changed several times throughout the first half before the teams headed into the lockerrooms at halftime tied at 34.
The Panthers came out hot in the second half, hitting eight of nine three-point attempts to cruise to a 17-point victory. Mandy Wittenmyer led Pitt with 22 points. The Panthers shot 56 percent from the floor, including a 67 percent second half performance.
Freshman guard Rachel Stockdale, earning her fifth start of the season, led the Wolfpack with 17 points. Post players Carisse Moody and Talisha Scates contributed 16 and 12 points apiece. Moody was the lone NC State player selected to the all-tournament team.
NC State will open conference play on December 30 at Wake Forest.
