Cancun, Mexico - NC State dropped its fourth consecutive game with a 71-58 loss to Mississippi State in the Torneo Cancun de Basquetbol. It marks the first time in school history the Wolfpack (6-4) have lost four straight non-conference games.
The Lady Bullodgs (8-2) jumped out to a 19-6 lead early in the game before NC State's bench rallied to pull the Wolfpack to within three at halftime. Mississippi State began the second half with a 11-4 run and NC State was never able to get closer than six points the remainder of the contest. The Bulldogs shot 50.9 percent from the floor, a season high for a Wolfpack opponent. NC State hit only 40.8 percent of its shots.
The 17th-ranked NC State squad was led by its post combo of Carisse Moody and Kaayla Chones who each contributed 13 points. The two combined for 13 rebounds for the Pack. Mississippi State was led by All-American LaToya Thomas' 26 points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard Tan White contributed 22 points, seven rebounds and five steals in the victory.
The win gives Mississippi State and Coach Sharon Fanning the tournament title, as the Bulldogs defeated Pittsburgh in its first game of the event. NC State and Pittsburgh will square off Saturday at 4 p.m. to battle for second place.
