The NC State women's basketball team will look to continue its early season success when it faces No. 2 Tennessee at the Disney Honda Elite Classic in Orlando, Fla. on Sunday.
The Wolfpack, ranked No. 8 in the country, is sporting a perfect record of 6-0. Its latest victory came Wednesday night at Reynolds Coliseum, thanks to an impressive second half effort that saw the Pack shooting a school-record 80.8 percent from the floor and 71.4 percent from behind the arc. With improved performances from Carisse Moody, 15 points and nine rebounds, and freshman Rachel Stockdale, a career-high 18 points and seven boards, NC State easily rolled to a 99-45 beating of Charleston Southern.
Now against the Lady Volunteers, a game that will be shown nationally on ESPN at 1p.m., the Pack will get its hardest test yet. Tennessee is averaging 95.2 points a game, while NC State is holding its opponents to a mere 51.5 points a contest. While both teams featuring a talented roster, the thing to watch will be the performance by each in the paint. The Pack's Kaayla Chones, along with Moody (a combined 20.7ppg, 10.7 rebounds) will be battling UT's Michelle Snow and Gwen Jackson (25.8, 13.5).
Both teams have faced No. 21 George Washington already this year. NC State defeated the Colonials 62-54 on Nov. 20, while the Lady Vols are coming off an 88-57 victory on Tuesday. Furthermore, this will be the first meeting between the two teams since a Jan. 29, 2000 date at Gund Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Despite an 18-point effort by Chones, the Pack fell 83-63.
