North Carolina State tries to complete a successful weekend as it plays Drake in the championship game of the Wolfpack Women's Invitational.
The 10th-ranked Wolfpack (1-0) opened their season with an 84-47 rout over Radford on Friday. Clarise Moody scored 19 points to pace four players in double figures for North Carolina State, which shot 53 percent (31-for-59) from the field.
Kay Yow's team is hoping to avoid a repeat of last year's performance in the tournament. After an easy rout in the first round, the Wolfpack suffered a 50-47 setback to the Oregon Ducks in the championship game. N.C. State did win the tourney two years ago.
The game may be a better test for Yow's team, which is still trying to adjust to life without its starting backcourt of Terah James and Ivy Gardner. James had season-ending surgery to repair a torn ACL in her left knee, while Gardner had arthroscopic surgery on her left knee and is expected to return later in the season.
Drake opened its season with a 76-58 triumph over UAB in the early game. Erin Richards scored 23 points for the Bulldogs, who used a 16-4 spurt late in the first half en route to a 38-25 first-half lead.
Jayme Anderson added 12 points and 15 rebounds for Drake, which sank 12-of-23 shots from 3-point range. Stephanie Schmitz and Carla Bennett also had 12 points apiece for the Bulldogs.
North Carolina State has won both all-time meetings between the schools, most recently a 62-42 triumph in the Torneo Cancun de Basquetbol in Mexico during the 1999-2000 season.
