Raleigh, N.C.-Ivy Gardner and Terah James, projected to start for Kay Yow's NC State women's basketball squad, will not be available for the start of the 2001-02 season.
Gardner, a 5-9 junior from Lanham, Maryland, underwent arthroscopic surgery on Sunday to have a left knee debridement. Gardner was named to the ACC's All-Defensive team and also garnered ACC All-Tournament second-team honors after averaging 12.3 points and five rebounds in three tourney games last season. Gardner is expected to return to action in 3-6 weeks.
James, a 5-7 sophomore from Riviera Beach, Florida, will have surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. James received a medical redshirt for the 2000-01 season after having reconstructive knee surgery on the ACL in her right knee last March. The Wolfpack women will be without her services for the 2001-02 season.
The Wolfpack will open its regular season on Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Radford in the GlaxoSmithKline Invitational at Reynolds Coliseum.
