Carly Fuller's goal in the 19th minute lifted the Duke women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the NC State Wolfpack at the WRAL Soccer Complex. The win moves Duke to 6-7 overall (1-5 ACC), while the Wolfpack drops to 7-7 overall and 0-5 in the ACC.
The match was a midfield struggle for most of the game with neither squad generating many significant attacks. Sophomore forward Lindsey Underwood (Princess Anne, Maryland) had a breakaway chance in the early stages of the first stanza, but slid her shot just wide right of the net.
Fuller's goal came on a free kick off an NC State foul from 25 yards out to give the Blue Devils the early advantage.
The Wolfpack came out stronger in the second half, but was thwarted each time by Duke goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir who had four saves in the shutout. Underwood had another opportunity early in the second half, but Helgadottir corralled the blast from point-blank range. Junior forward Erin Bushey (Biglerville, Pennsylvania) nearly gave the Wolfpack the equalizer in the waning minutes of the match with a header attempt in front of the net before it was also turned aside.
"We talked about playing with a sense of urgency when we're down 1-0," NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan said. "We actually did that, and I was happy with that aspect. We almost got a goal in the last couple minutes of the game because we played with that urgency."
"When you go up against a team like this, and you create the chances but don't put them away, it's very frustrating,"
Both squads took seven shots in the match, while Duke held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Wolfpack will be back at Method Road Soccer Stadium on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against Maryland.
