RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Wolfpack Women will square off with #7 Iowa State in the ACC/Big XII Challenge Sunday at 1 p.m. in Reynolds Colisuem. The game will be nationally-televised on ESPN2. Come out and support the Wolfpack!
The Wolfpack: NC State is coming off back-to-back close losses on the road to its two local rivals, North Carolina and Duke. The Wolfpack would like nothing better than to start its four-game home stand with an upset of top-10 Iowa State in the nationally-televised contest. A year ago, #20 NC State upset #9 Rutgers in a game also televised by ESPN2. The Wolfpack have won four of its last six games against top-10 opponents. The Pack have also won four of its last five games against top-10 foes in Reynolds Coliseum.
The Wolfpack Women defense is ranked fourth in the nation in scoring defense (55.6), but it has given up an average of 66 points in the last seven games, five of which are losses. NC State is led by the inside-outside combination of Carisse Moody (13.6 ppg, 6.7 rpg) and Tynesha Lewis (14.0 ppg, 4.8 rpg).
The Opponent: Iowa State, ranked seventh in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today Coaches polls, leads the nation in three-point field goals made per game with over nine treys per outing. Erica Haugen has connected on 31 shots from behind the arc while Megan Taylor and Erica Haugen have nailed 27 three's apiece. Despite the three-point threats, center Angie Welle leads the team in scoring (17.7) and rebounds (10.7). The Cyclones roll into Reynolds Coliseum with a five-game winning streak and a 14-1 overall record.
Today's Matchup: This is a contest of two very different style teams. NC State's stingy defense (55.6) is ranked fourth in the nation, while Iowa State's explosive offense (82.2) is ranked fifth in the country. The Cyclones average 42.4 percent from behind the arc, but the Wolfpack have only allowed opponents to shoot 25.9 percent from three-point land. Both teams have played at #5 Duke this season, with Iowa State suffering a 81-63 defeat for its first loss of the season and the Wolfpack dropping a 62-59 decision three days ago. ISU is 1-4 all-time versus ACC opponents. NC State is 5-6 versus Big XII opponents.
