ACC Honors Breitenbach
The Atlantic Coast Conference named NC State's Zach Breitenbach its Wrestler of the Week for the week of January 7-13. Breitenbach went 5-0 for the week, capped by a thrilling upset victory over the second-ranked 197-pounder in the country, to raise his record on the season to 14-4.
Breitenbach, ranked 16th nationally at 197, began the week on Tuesday with a 12-1 major decision over Columbia's Thomas Francisco at the Duke Duals, then won by forfeit vs. Delaware State.
On Saturday at the NC State Duals, Breitenbach opened up with a second-period pin of The Citadel's Jordan Everett at the 3:30 mark, the fourth pin of his career. Breitenbach then defeated VMI's Brian Toney, 7-2.
In the final bout of the evening, Breitenbach defeated No. 2-ranked Pat Quirk of Illinois, 2-1. He is 3-3 vs. ranked opponents this season.
Beating Ranked Opponents
So far this season, the Wolfpack has faced 24 ranked individual opponents and defeated seven of them, the team's best mark vs. ranked wrestlers in several years. The Pack was 4-30 vs. ranked opponents a year ago, and 9-37 in 1999.
Leading the way vs. ranked opponents this season has been senior 197-pounder Zach Breitenbach (3-3) and Scott Garren (2-1). A year ago, no NC State wrestlers had more than one win against ranked opponents, and only Pierre Pryor, at 1-0, has a winning record against ranked foes.
Wolfpack Embarks On Three-Match Road Swing
NC State will be away from Reynolds Coliseum for its next three matches, beginning this Saturday at Maryland. A week after taking on the Terrapins, the Wolfpack will travel to western Virginia for a day-night doubleheader at two different venues. The Pack will wrestle Virginia in another ACC match at 1 p.m. in Charlottesville, and then will travel up I-81 to Harrisonburg to take on James Madison at 7 p.m.
NC State's next homestand will be two matches the last week of January and the first weekend of February. Campbell will be at Reynolds Coliseum on Wednesday, January 31, for a 7:30 p.m. match, and Appalachian State will travel to Raleigh that Saturday, February 3, for a 2 p.m. match.
The Series With Maryland, Virginia and James Madison
NC State holds a 17-9 lead in the series with Maryland since Bob Guzzo became the Wolfpack's head coach in 1974-75. The two teams have split the last six meetings, but the Terps have won each of the last four meetings in College Park. NC State's last win at Maryland was a 17-14 win in 1991.
The Wolfpack under Guzzo holds a commanding 21-6 advantage in the series with Virginia. NC State has won the last two meetings, 14 of the last 16, and 21 of the last 24. The Wolfpack holds a 10-3 advantage over the Cavaliers in Charlottesville, having lost just one road match to Virginia since 1977.
James Madison and NC State have met just seven times in the Guzzo era, and the Wolfpack is 7-0 vs. the Dukes. The only two previous matches in Harrisonburg were in 1985, a 34-9 win for the Pack, and two years ago, a 22-9 win that was Guzzo's 300th career dual-match victory. The closest match in the series was a year ago at Reynolds Coliseum, a 19-15 decision for NC State.
