Raleigh, NC (Sept. 21) - NC States run in the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships was halted Sept. 21 when NC States Matt Lucas and 73rd-ranked Eric Jackson were defeated in the consolation round.
Lucas, who qualified for the event through the pre-qualifying stages of the tournament earlier in the week, lost his first match of the day to Rene Combette of Mississippi State, 6-3, 6-3. In the consolation round Lucas dropped a hard fought match to Oliver Foreman of Middle Tennessee State, 6-1, 6-4.
Jackson, who played his first match of the year after a stellar 1999 season, lost in the first round to 23-rd ranked Peter Handoyo of Tennessee 6-2, 6-2. He then lost to Daniel Homedes of Southern Mississippi 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
"We just didnt play well on the pressure points today," said Wolfpack head coach Eric Hayes. "Lucas played well, but was just so tired because he was playing his seventh match in the past week. Eric was playing his first match of the season and just didnt handle some of the pressure points as well as he could have. Overall, I was just happy that we got the experience of coming here and playing in this tourament. The experience that Lucas gained this weekend is simply immeasurable."
The Wolfpack will next be in action at the second leg of the collegiate grand slam, the Reebok/ITA All-American Championships in Jacksons hometown, Stone Mountain, Ga. The tournament will run Oct. 12-15.
