Play Begins At Wolfpack Invitational

RALEIGH, NC (Sept. 15) - The NC State Wolfpack women's tennis team began play at the Wolfpack Invitational on Sept. 15 at the NC State Tennis Complex. Along with NC State, Appalachian State, Davidson, East Carolina, High Point, Marshall, and Virginia also competed. Flights A, B, and C for singles and Flight A for doubles were set up in a bracket format, while Flight D singles and Flight B doubles were set up in a round robin format.
In flight A singles, NC State's Jennifer Jassawalla, a freshman from Houston, Texas, cruised into Saturday's semifinal round. In her first round match-up she defeated Tanya Eberhart of Appalachian State 6-1, 6-1 and then defeated Lyndall Jordan of East Carolina 6-2, 6-0 in her quarterfinal match.
The Pack had three competing in the Flight B singles bracket with two advancing into the semifinals. Freshman Jackie Leskovar, from Ontario, Canada, defeated Katherine Hatch of Davidson in the first round, 6-1, 6-2, and then Allison Lane of Appalachian State, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Pack sophomore Loni Worsley, from Winston-Salem, NC, defeated Yasamine Hilu of Davidson in the first round 6-4, 6-1 and Elena Berger of Appalachian State , 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals to advance into the semifinals. Kristen Nicholls, a junior from Roswell, GA, had a tough match against Sheela Cabiling of Marshall, but picked up the win in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. In her quarterfinal match she faced Leslie Cook of Virginia and lost, 7-5, 6-4..
Freshman Amanda DeVore, from Fayetteville, NC and sophomore Myrna Bawano, from Jakarda, Indonesia, competed in Flight C singles. DeVore lost her first round match-up against Paulina Sierpinsky of East Carolina, 6-4, 6-3, but was able to advance to the consolation semifinal after her opponent from North Carolina A&T withdrew. Bawano advanced to the semifinals after her first round opponent, also from North Carolina A&T withdrew, and then she defeated Kathryn Brown of Appalachian State, 6-1, 6-2.
In the Flight D singles, which was broken into a round robin format with a red draw and a black draw, sophomore Landis Strader from Greensboro, NC and freshman Morgan Whilock from Wilson, NC competed. Strader, competing in the black draw, finished the day 1-1 after defeating Lauren Petty of East Carolina and losing to Donna Altenburger of Appalachian State. Whitlock, competing in the red draw, also finished the day 1-1 after she defeated Ali Fitzgerald of Appalachian State and then lost to Kate Veazey of East Carolina. Both will play one more match on Saturday to finish up the round robin format.
Only one round was completed in Flight A doubles. The Packs combo of Nicholls and Worsley advanced after defeating Kamthe and Jordan of East Carolina 8-5. Lam and Bawano cruised by Berger and Fayad of Appalachian State 8-1. Jassawalla and Leskovar fell in their first round match-up, 9-7, to Sukner and Cabiling of Marshall. In the round robin Flight B draw, both of the Pack's doubles teams won their opening day matches.
Play will continue at the Wolfpack Invitational at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning and will finish up late Sunday afternoon.
