Although their team is in the midst of a nightmarish season, Charlotte Sting teammates and former NC State basketball stars Rhonda Mapp and Andrea Stinson are making strong bids for the WNBA's Eastern Conference All-Star team.
Mapp, who's averaging 11.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, is currently second in fan balloting for the Eastern Conference's starting center position. As of June 28, Mapp trailed Orlando's Taj McWilliams by 1,193 votes.
Stinson is well back in fan voting for the guard positions, but an excellent showing in the first half of the season has made her a strong candidate to become an at-large selection as a reserve. In the latest WNBA statistics, Stinson is currently ranked 6th in scoring (17.5 ppg.) and 4th in steals (2.60 ppg.).
Voters select two guards, two forwards and one center for each team. Starters for the July 17 All-Star Game in Phoenix will be announced on July 8. Each conference's eight head coaches will select reserves.
Despite the efforts of Mapp and Stinson, Charlotte owns the league's worst record at 2-13.
