When he was a place-kicker at NC State from 1991-'94, Steve Videtich was known for his laser-like accuracy. That same precision that helped him become an All-American in 1994 is now being put on display in the Arena Football League.
Videtich, 29, made his return to Raleigh last Friday (6/9) night as a member of the Milwaukee Mustangs, who thrashed the Carolina Cobras 63-16 at the Entertainment and Sports Arena.
While the AFL isn't the NFL, it is an action packed game that puts a premium on kicking. That's where Videtich comes in. Although the Arena League's goal posts are only nine feet apart (compared to 18 and a half feet for the outdoor game), Videtich has mastered the art of "threading the needle" with his kicks.
The Winston-Salem native ranks high among the league leaders in a number of career categories, including: Kick scoring (478 pts, 5th), PATs made (277, 4th), PATs attempted (308, 4th), PAT accuracy (89.9 %, 7th), field goals made (67, T5th), field goals attempted (135, 9th) and field goal percentage (49.6 %, 3rd).
Videtich put together his finest season in 1997 when he was named AFL Kicker of the Year.
Through eight games this season, he's ranked second in the league having converted on 11 of 20 field goal attempts.
A two-time All-ACC selection while at NC State, Videtich capped his college career by being named to the Football News and UPI All-America teams in 1994. In his final season with the Wolfpack, Videtich hit 16 of 18 field goal attempts and was successful on 29 of 31 extra point tries.
He ranks second in the NC State career record book for field goal percentage (.792) and third in career field goals (42).
Steve and his wife Carolyn were married in February. The couple is expecting their first child later this year.
