Chones, Simpson Invited To USA Basketball Tryouts

The USA Basketball Women's Select Team Committee selected 45 of the country's top female collegiate basketball players to attend the trials. The USA Basketball event will combine off-court seminars along with practice sessions and a four-team, round-robin tournament that will also serve as trials for the 2000 USA Basketball R. William Jones Cup Team.
The 12-member USA squad, which will be announced on May 22, will train July 3-12 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. before departing on July 13 for Jones Cup competition held in Taipei, Taiwan July 16-20. The team will reassemble in Honolulu, Hawaii to train for a Sept. 3 exhibition game against the USA Senior National team. The contest, held at the University of Hawaii, will be nationally televised on ESPN2 and will be the final domestic exhibition game for the USA National team before leaving for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
Chones, a 6-3 forward/center, averaged 11.4 points and 7.9 rebounds this year for the Wolfpack and was named to the ACC All-Freshman team. The Pepper Pike, OH native grabbed 228 rebounds this season which ranks second by NC State freshman in the school record books.
Simpson, a 6-0 guard/forward, contributed 8.5 points and 2.9 rebounds during her rookie season with the Wolfpack Women. She made 27 three-pointers this year, which ranks fourth in the NC State freshman record books.
