How's this for overcoming adversity: Two days after he was disqualified for
signing an incorrect scorecard at the NCAA East Regional, NC State golfer
Carl Petterson fired a 66 on Monday to place second at a U.S. Open qualifier
at the Plantation Golf Club in Pinehurst.
Petterson's round included a hole-in-one on the 171-yard par three 11th hole. Monday's round earned him a spot in next month's U.S. Open sectionals.
At the East Regional over the weekend, Petterson cost himself a chance to win individual medalist honors when he signed an incorrect scorecard. Without Petterson's score, the Wolfpack failed to qualify for the NCAA Finals.
Three former NC State golfers also advanced in U.S. Open Qualifying on Monday: Tim Clark and Mark Slawter fired 67's while Korky Kemp carded a 68.
