RALEIGH, N.C. (April 5) - Brian Wright homered and singled, Josh Schmitt doubled and singled, and seven NC State pitchers combined to scatter six hits April 5 at Doak Field as the Wolfpack downed Charleston Southern 6-2.
The win gave NC State, 19-14, a sweep of the two-game series with the Buccaneers. CSU fell to 17-21-1 with the loss. Freshman righthander Daniel Caldwell, the third NC State pitcher of the game, worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning on just five pitches and picked up the win to even his record at 1-1. Charleston Southern starter Andrew Viars allowed five runs on 10 hits in seven innings to fall to 4-3. Viars walked six and struck out four.
Schmitt singled to lead off the bottom of the first inning and Craig Lee walked. Wright's fly to center field advanced Schmitt to third, and Mike Prochaska's squeeze bunt scored Schmitt to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead. Jeremy Dutton reached on an infield single, and Lee alertly scored all the way from second base on the play to make it 2-0 in favor of NC State.
Charleston Southern tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the third on a leadoff walk by Richard Gomersall, a one-out triple by Jay Corrigale, and a sacrifice fly by Adrian Vanderburg. The Wolfpack broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth when Andy Baxter led off with a double to left field, took third on a groundout by Ryan Strain and scored on an RBI groundout by Chris Goodman.
Wright's seventh homer of the season, a one-out solo shot to right-center in the bottom of the seventh inning, increased the Wolfpack's lead to 4-2, and after Jason Smith walked and stole second, Dan Mooney stroked an RBI single to center field to make it 5-2. Strain led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, took second on a sacrifice and scored on Schmitt's double to left-center for the game's final run.
