Justin Sturge, the first of five Coastal Carolina pitchers, worked three scoreless innings to earn the victory and even his record at 2-2. Sturge allowed four hits and did not walk a batter or record a strikeout. Closer Kit Kadlec pitched a scoreless ninth inning to notch his seventh save of the season. Wolfpack starter Mike Sollie was the tough-luck loser after pitching eight innings and allowing four runs, all unearned, on six hits. Sollie walked two and struck out five, but fell to 4-5 with the defeat.
The Chanticleers struck for three unearned runs in the top of the second. Chris Carter led off and reached on an error. Chad Felty and Doug Marty drew one-out walks to load the bases, and Jason Davis's single drove in the first run of the game. One out later, Powell singled to left field to drive in two more runs and give Coastal Carolina a 3-0 lead.
Marty led off the top of the fourth inning and reached on an error, took second on Davis's sacrifice bunt, went to third on a single by Jim Humay, and scored on Powell's sacrifice fly.
That run turned out to be the difference in the game. The Wolfpack scratched for a pair in the bottom of the fifth. Andy Baxter was hit by a pitch and Jeremy Dutton walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Craig Lee pinch-hit and singled to right field to drive in a run, and Jason Smith's two-out RBI single to left field drove in Dutton to cut the lead to 4-2.
Tyler Tiesing reached on a two-out error in the bottom of the sixth, stole second and scored when Ryan Strain's fly ball to right field was dropped for a two-base error. That cut the Coastal lead to 4-3, but the Wolfpack was unable to push across another run, stranding two runners in both the eighth and ninth innings.
