The win lifted UNC to 1-4 in the ACC and 23-5 overall. The Wolfpack fell to 5-3 in the conference and 16-9 overall. Snare -- who walked one and struck out six, five of them looking -- improved to 5-1. NC State's Mike Sollie dropped to 3-3 after allowing three runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings. He walked none and struck out one.
Noth Carolina took an early lead off Sollie in the bottom of the first. Adam Greenberg and Dan Moylan led off with singles, and after Clay Hooper struck out, Tyrell Godwin singled to left field to drive in Greenberg. Moylan held at third on the play, and Godwin was thrown out attempting to advance to second on the throw home.
The Tar Heels made it 2-0 in the bottom of the second on a leadoff single by Matt McCay, a one-out double by Sean Farrell, and an RBI groundout by Chad Prosser. That rally was short-circuited when Greenberg was picked off first base on rarely successful the fake-to-third, throw-to-first play.
The Wolfpack picked up an unearned run in the top of the third. Jason Smith and Brian Wright led off with singles to left field. With one out, Mike Prochaska bounced to second base, forcing Wright at second, but Hooper's relay throw to first base was wide of the bag for an error that allowed Smith to score from second.
UNC got the run back and made it 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Matt McCay led off with an opposite-field double to right field, went to third on a grounder to first, and scored on a wild pitch. A sixth-inning sacrifice fly by Prosser and an RBI single by Greenberg gave the Tar Heels a 5-1 lead.
The Wolfpack's final run came in the top of the eighth when Mike Prochaska drew a leadoff walk off reliever Derrick DePriest, went to third on Craig Lee's one-out single to right-center, and scored on Josh Schmitt's double down the left-field line.
