Tonight's Contest: NC State is looking for its fourth straight conference win and its first road victory without center Summer Erb. The 6-6 senior is out six weeks with three broken bones in her left foot. The Wolfpack are currently in second place in the ACC standings, one game behind Virginia. Maryland is looking to rebound from a 59-57 loss to Clemson at home on Sunday. For the last 14 games, the Terps have been in a pattern of winning a game and then losing the next.
In a matchup earlier this season, the Wolfpack downed Maryland 71-52 in Reynolds Coliseum. NC State placed four players in double figures in that contest, led by Erb's 19 points. Maryland's Tiffany Brown scored a team-high 12 points. These ACC foes have met 57 times on the hardwood with NC State holding a 33-24 advantage.
This game features two coaches with 50 years of combined experience in the ACC. NC State's Kay Yow and Maryland's Chris Weller are both in their 25th season at their respective school.
Scouting Maryland: The Terrapins have a balanced scoring attack, led by sophomore Marche Strickland (13.8 ppg), senior Tiffany Brown (13.3 ppg) and sophomore Deedee Warley (12.0 ppg). Erb Out With Broken Foot
NC State center Summer Erb has been diagnosed with fractures of the second, third and
fourth metatarsals in her left foot. She will be on crutches for 7-10 days and then will be
placed in a walking boot. The 6-6 senior is expected to miss six weeks.
The injury occurred in the final minute of the game against North Carolina on February 3. Erb went up for a layup with 36 seconds remaining when she was fouled by UNC's LaShonda Allen and landed awkwardly.
"First and foremost, I really hate it for Summer," said Coach Kay Yow. "I knew she would go strong down the stretch and would have an excellent chance to repeat as ACC Player of the Year and be a contender for other postseason honors.
"Summer has played a major role in us being a contender for the ACC regular season championship. We will need our young players to step it up another notch for us to continue to be a contender for the league title."
Erb is the Wolfpack's leading scorer and rebounder with 15.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest.
Lineup Change
After using the same starting lineup in the Wolfpack's first 19 games, Coach Yow
started freshman Ivy Gardner at the two guard instead of Tynesha Lewis against Wake Forest.
Against North Carolina, the Wolfpack staff went back to the original starting lineup of Erb,
Chones, Bates, Lewis and James.
Due to the injury to Summer Erb, NC State used its third different starting lineup of the season against Florida State. Gardner earned her second career start with Bates moving to the power forward spot.
Orange Crush
NC State seems to struggle against teams with orange as a school color. The Wolfpack's
four losses have all come against teams that wear orange - Clemson, Virginia, Texas and
Tennessee.
Hot Off the Bench
Amy Simpson has provided a spark off the bench for the Wolfpack in the last few weeks.
In the last seven games she has averaged 13.0 points and 3.9 rebounds in 20 minutes per game.
The freshman scored a career-high 26 points against Duke and has hit 12 three-pointers in the
last seven games.
Lewis Struggles for Wolfpack
Junior guard Tynesha Lewis had not failed to post back-to-back double figure games
since the first four game of her rookie season before she earned a starting role...until this
year.
The preseason first team All-ACC selection played well early in the season, scoring double figures in the first 14 games of the season, before hitting a shooting slump. She scored in single digits in four straight games(NC State was 1-3 in those games) and recorded a career-low two points against Florida State.
In the last eight games she has averaged 6.8 points and shot only 27 percent (24-88 from the floor.
NC State is 12-7 over the last three years when Lewis fails to score in double figures.
Shooting Out of Slump
After leading the ACC earlier in the season in field goal percentage, the Wolfpack fell
to fourth with a midseason shooting slump and are now back atop the league standings with
44.8%.. In NC State's four losses this season, the Pack hit just 39.2% (99-252) of its field
goal attempts, while shooting 45.9% in its wins. NC State set consecutive season lows in losses
to Clemson (37.7%) and Virginia (33.3%).
The Wolfpack Women have also struggled from the free throw line in its four losses, managing only 50-94 (53.2%). NC State is seventh in the ACC in free throw percentage at 62.6%. In its last four games, the Wolfpack have hit only 67 of 140 attempts from the charity stripe for a dismal 47.8%.
