"Buddy Green is a man who has great credibility throughout the country," said Amato. "He is an outstanding recruiter and coach and the fact that he is a graduate of NC State University makes him an even better fit for our program."
Green has been responsible for the resurgence of the Chattanooga program, a team that had gone five years without a winning record before he took the reins. His 1997 squad posted a 7-4 record and a national I-AA ranking. While serving as interim athletics director and head coach, he played a major role in the completion of Finley Stadium, which is considered to be one of the top I-AA facilities in the nation and has been the site of the last three IAA championship games. Chattanooga's graduation rate for football has improved every season he has been with the program, while grade point averages also showed measureable improvements.
"I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to come back to NC State and work with Chuck Amato," said Green, who competed in four bowl games as a player and nine as an assistant coach. "This is a great opportunity for me and my family. I have great respect for Chuck, and I think that under his direction, there are great things ahead for NC State football. I have cherished my love for NC State and the city of Raleigh over the past 30 years and I look forward to coming back home."
The Wolfpack defense ranked among the nation's best during Green's first stint as coordinator, finishing 10th in total defense in 1990, 17th in 1991 and 12th in scoring defense in 1992. He coached three All-American defensive backs at NC State, Jesse Campbell, Mike Reid and Sebastian Savage. One or more of his players earned first-team All-ACC honors five of his eight seasons with the Wolfpack.
A native of Stanley, N.C., Green was a member of the football and baseball squads at NC State following his graduation from Stanley High School, playing defensive back under Amato. He was a member of Lou Holt's 1972 Peach Bowl championship squad, and played on three ACC Championship teams (football in 1973 and baseball in 1973 and 1974).
Green earned his B.A. in speech communication from NC State in 1976. Following graduation, he coached briefly in the high school ranks before returning to the Wolfpack staff as a graduate assistant under Bo Rein.
Green left NC State in 1980 to take a position at Louisiana State, where he worked with the defensive backs, was head junior varsity coach, and served as academic coordinator. He then served two seasons as defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Southern University. In 1982, Green was named athletic director and head football coach at Northern Nash High School in Rocky Mount, a position he held until taking the position as secondary coach at VMI in 1983. In 1984, Green joined Pat Dye"s staff at Auburn University, helping lead the Tigers to the 1985 Cotton Bowl.
Green is married to the former Sharon Losco. The couple has two children: Todd (21) and Courtney (18), who are both students at the University of Tennessee.
