#11 NC State (17-4, 8-2) vs. Florida State (9-11, 2-7)
February 6, 2000 * 2:00 p.m.
Reynolds Coliseum - Raleigh, N.C.
Today's Contest: A key for today's game for NC State will be how Coach Yow's squad responds to the loss of lone senior Summer Erb. The team's leading scorer and rebounder, Erb suffered a broken foot in Thursday's win over North Carolina. She is expected to miss six weeks. While Erb is the nucleus of the Wolfpack's offense, the team has other potent scorers that must step up in Erb's absence.
NC State currently stands at second place in the ACC, one game back from Virginia while FSU is looking to climb out of the last spot in the league.
In the first matchup of the season between these two teams, NC State won 62-58 despite Erb being held to eight points. Kaayla Chones and Tynesha Lewis each scored 17 points in that game to lead the Wolfpack. April Traylor led FSU with 23 points.
These two squads have meet 17 times with the Wolfpack holding a 14-3 advantage in the series, including eight straight victories. The last time FSU defeated NC State was on Feb. 20, 1994 with a 59-58 win in Reynolds Coliseum.
Scouting Florida State: The Seminoles, like NC State, have three players that average double figures. Senior Latavia Coleman scores 16.4 per outing while April Traylor and Brooke Wyckoff contribute 12.9 and 11.4 per game respectively. Wyckoff is FSU's all-time career leader in blocks, including 27 this season to lead the ACC. FSU is coming off a 76-47 win over Wake Forest. Prior to that, the Seminoles had lost four straight, by an average of 7.5 points, including a 55-52 loss at the hands of then #11 Auburn. The Seminoles lead the ACC in steals (11.8) and blocked shots (3.8).

Erb Out With Broken Foot
NC State center Summer Erb has been diagnosed with fractures of the second, third and fourth metatarsals in her left foot. She will be on crutches for 7-10 days and then will be placed in a walking boot. The 6-6 senior is expected to miss six weeks.
The injury occurred in the final minute of the game against North Carolina on February 3. Erb went up for a layup with 36 seconds remaining when she was fouled by UNC's LaShonda Allen and landed awkwardly.
"First and foremost, I really hate it for Summer," said Coach Kay Yow. "I knew she would go strong down the stretch and would have an excellent chance to repeat as ACC Player of the Year and be a contender for other postseason honors.
"Summer has played a major role in us being a contender for the ACC regular season championship. We will need our young players to step it up another notch for us to continue to be a contender for the league title."
Erb is the Wolfpack's leading scorer and rebounder with 15.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest.
Lineup Change
After using the same starting lineup in the Wolfpack's first 19 games, Coach Yow started freshman Ivy Gardner at the two guard instead of Tynesha Lewis against Wake Forest. Against North Carolina, the Wolfpack staff went back to the original starting lineup of Erb, Chones, Bates, Lewis and James.
Due to the injury to Summer Erb, NC State will use its third different starting lineup of the season against Florida State.
Orange Crush
NC State seems to struggle against teams with orange as a school color. The Wolfpack's four losses have all come against teams that wear orange - Clemson, Virginia, Texas and Tennessee.
Hot Off the Bench
Amy Simpson has provided a spark off the bench for the Wolfpack in the last few weeks. In the last seven games she has averaged 13.0 points and 3.9 rebounds in 20 minutes per game. The freshman scored a career-high 26 points against Duke and has hit 12 three-pointers in the last seven games.
Lewis' Slump Hurts Wolfpack
Entering the Tennessee contest, junior Tynesha Lewis had not scored in double figures in the last four games and NC State has lost three of those games and had to go into overtime to win the other. In that Tennessee game, NC State lost 83-63 while Lewis manged only 10 points.
The only other time Lewis has not reached double figures in four consecutive games was the first four games of her freshman season when she was coming off the bench. Last year she failed to reach double figures only twice - in the first game of the season and the last game of the year. NC State is 11-7 over the last three years when Lewis fails to score in double figures.
Shooting Woes
After leading the ACC earlier in the season in field goal percentage, the Wolfpack fell to fourth with a midseason shooting slump and are now back up to second in the league with 44.6%.. In NC State's four losses this season, the Pack hit just 39.2% (99-252) of its field goal attempts, while shooting 45.9% in its wins. NC State set consecutive season lows in losses to Clemson (37.7%) and Virginia (33.3%).
The Wolfpack Women have also struggled from the free throw line in its four losses, managing only 50-94 (53.2%). NC State is seventh in the ACC in free throw percentage at 62.6%. In its last four games, the Wolfpack have hit only 53 of 118 attempts from the charity stripe for a dismal 44.7%.

Pack Sets Record For Best Start
With its 71-52 win over Maryland on Jan. 9, the Wolfpack Women improved to 14-0, the best start in the 26-year history of the NC State women's basketball programs. The previous best start was 10-0, which was accomplished twice - during the 1990-91 season and the 1997-98 season. The 1991 was a team capable of winning the national championship but were upset by UConn in the NCAA tourney. The 1997-98 team advanced to the NCAA Final Four.
Freshmen Records
Wolfpack rookies Kaayla Chones, Terah James and Amy Simpson are already climbing the charts of the freshmen record book.
Chones currently has 167 rebounds which ranks sixth in the freshman record book for boards in a season. The freshman record for rebounds in a season stands at 272 by Genia Beasley. Her current scoring average of 11.8 would place her in the sixth spot and her field goal percentage of 57.5% ranks third.
James has 86 assists so far on the season which ranks third. The record for assists by a freshman is held by Angie Armstrong with 136.
Amy Simpson's 21 three-pointers ranks her fifth on the freshman charts for treys.
Erb, Lewis Join 1,000 Point Club
With her first basket of the second half against New Hampshire on Dec. 21, senior Summer Erb eclipsed the 1,000 point mark in her third season at NC State.
One game after Summer Erb hit the 1,000 point milestone, teammate Tynesha Lewis joined the fun. Lewis hit two free throws with just over a minute remaining in the game to score the 1,000th point of her career.
They became the 19th and 20th players in the 26-year history of the program to reach the scoring milestone.
NCSU Best in ACC in 1,000 Scorers
NC State has more 1,000-point career scorers than any other school in the ACC with 20. Clemson ranks second with 18, followed by Maryland and North Carolina with 17.
