Today's Contest: This is a battle of not only two nationally-ranked teams, but the top two teams in the ACC. NC State needs a win today to stay in the hunt for the ACC regular season title. Virginia currently has a half game lead over the Wolfpack in the league race, with Duke in third place a half game behind the Pack. This game features a matchup of the two frontrunners for ACC Rookie of the Year honors. Kaayla Chones (11.5 ppg, 7.8 rpg) will start at center for the Wolfpack while Schuye LaRue (14.3 ppg, 7.7 rpg) will run the paint for the Wahoos. In the earlier meeting between these teams, Virginia escaped Reynolds Coliseum with an 80-73 win. Summer Erb, who will miss today's game with a broken foot, posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Freshmen Kaayla Chones and Amy Simpson added 18 and 16 points apiece. Virginia was led by Telisha Quarles' 21 points and Renee Robinson's 19. Virginia is the only ACC team that holds an advantage in the all-time series with NC State. The Cavaliers have a slight 26-23 leads in the series. UVa has won the last three meetings between these teams. The Wolfpack last won in Charlottesville on Jan. 11, 1998 with a 67-59 victory. Today's matchup will be nationally televised by espn2 with Pam Ward and Fran Harris handling commentator duties.
Scouting Virginia: The Cavaliers are coming off a huge 72-63 road win at Clemson that moved them into first place in the league standings. Virginia shot 68.8 percent (11-16) from three-point range in that contest. Virginia is one of the best shooting teams in the league, averaging 44.6 from the floor, 70.5 from the free throw line and 32.0 from behind the arc. Schuye LaRue and Svetlana Volnaya lead the Cavs with 14.3 points and 13.9 points per game respectively. LaRue is also UVa's top rebounder with 7.7 caroms per outing.

The Coaches: Head Coach Kay Yow is celebrating her silver anniversary season on the Wolfpack bench. She has a 532-219 record in her 25 season at NC State and a 589-238 overall collegiate coaching mark. One of the most successful coaches in the country, she currently ranks fifth in career wins. Debbie Ryan has a 521-180 record in her 23rd season with the Cavaliers.
Last Time Out: NC State fell to Duke 70-64 on Thursday night in Durham. Talisha Scates had a career-high 14 points to lead the Wolfpack. Virginia downed Clemson 72-63 behind Svetlana Volnaya's 22 points.
Next Up: NC State hosts Georgia Tech on Thursday in its final regular season game of the year. Virginia travels to Maryland for a Thursday night ACC matchup.
Erb Out With Broken Foot: NC State center Summer Erb has been diagnosed with fractures of the second, third and fourth metatarsals in her left foot. She will be on crutches for 7-10 days and then will be placed in a walking boot. The 6-6 senior is expected to miss six weeks.
The injury occurred in the final minute of the game against North Carolina on February 3. Erb went up for a layup with 36 seconds remaining when she was fouled by UNC's LaShonda Allen and landed awkwardly.
Erb is the Wolfpack's leading scorer and rebounder with 15.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest.
Lineup Change: After using the same starting lineup in the Wolfpack's first 19 games, Coach Yow started freshman Ivy Gardner at the two guard instead of Tynesha Lewis against Wake Forest. Against North Carolina, the Wolfpack staff went back to the original starting lineup of Erb, Chones, Bates, Lewis and James.
Due to the injury to Summer Erb, NC State used its third different starting lineup of the season against Florida State. Gardner earned her second career start with Bates moving to the power forward spot.
At Maryland, Yow used her fourth different starting five with Talisha Scates earning her first career start along with Lewis, James, Bates and Chones.
Orange Crush: NC State seems to struggle against teams with orange as a school color. Four of NC State's five losses have come against teams that wear orange - Clemson, Virginia, Texas and Tennessee.
Hot Off the Bench: Amy Simpson has provided a spark off the bench for the Wolfpack in the last few weeks. In the last 10 games she averaged 12.0 points and 3.2 rebounds in approximately 20 minutes per game. The freshman scored a career-high 26 points against Duke on Jan. 20 and has hit 16 three-pointers in the last 10 games.
