Hawaii Diary: Wolfpack Women Arrive Safely
11/23/2000 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
After a long day of travel on Tuesday, the women's basketball team arrived in Hawaii that night at 8:40 Hawaiian time or 1:40 a.m. EST. The players and staff received the traditional Hawaiian greeting of fresh flower leis.
Tuesday began with a breakfast buffet in the Beachside Cafe which included many local fruits and other specialty items. The Wolfpack Women then headed to the University of Hawaii for a two-hour practice session in preparation for the Wahine Classic which begins on Friday.
Following a quick lunch stop after practice, the team went to Pearl Harbor to visit the USS Arizona Memorial. The players and staff visited the museum before watching a brief movie on the events leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. A boat then took the visitors to the memorial which sits atop the sunken USS Arizona.
The Pack then enjoyed some free time in the late afternoon. Some of the players walked on the beach, others enjoyed a swim in the pool, while some browsed through the nearby shops.
The Wolfpack Women enjoyed a Hawaiian-style Polynesian dinner show Tuesday night. Dinner included many local specialties including sushi, Hawaiian chicken, mahi-mahi with macadamia nut sauce, pineapple upside down cake and many more delicious items. The live show was also a treat, with singing, dancing and fire handlers. Coach Yow and a few other staff members and players were invited on stage to join the Hawaiian dancers.
After a full day, the Pack headed to bed in anticipation of another fun-filled day on Thursday, and celebrating Thanksgiving with other members of the Wolfpack Women family.
Check back throughout the week for more updates on the Wolfpack's stay in Honolulu. And be sure to check out the game with Northern Illinois on Friday at 2 p.m. EST.
