Raleigh, NC (Oct. 29) - The Wake Forest women's soccer team used a game-winning goal by freshman forward Alena Thom at the 105:36 mark of double-overtime to hand NC State, ranked 15th in the weekly rankings by Soccer America, a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat on Oct. 29 at Method Road Soccer Stadium.
The win moves Wake Forest (10-7-1, 4-3 ACC) into a four-way logjam for second place and drops NC State to 10-6-3 overall (2-3-2 ACC). The Wolfpack will be the sixth seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament against an opponent yet to be determined. The tournament will begin Nov. 2 at Duke University and will run through Nov. 5.
After a scoreless first half, Wake Forest broke through first with a goal by sophomore forward Joline Charlton off an assist by junior midfielder Emily Taggart at the 57:45 mark of the first half. Nearly eight minutes later, NC State fought back when senior forward Shannon Tully took a pass from freshman forward Katherine Warman and sailed a 15-yard shot just over the outstretched hand of Deacon goalkeeper Tracy Chao. The game then went scoreless for over 40 minutes before Thom blasted home the game-winner on a crossing pass from Charlton.
Wake Forest nearly scored in the first half when Charlton fired a shot to the top of the Wolfpack net in the 27th minute, only to have it batted over the crossbar by leaping NC State goalkeeper Gretchen Lear. Then, in the 50th minute, sophomore forward Laura Scott had a chance to score from 5 yards out, but could not get off a shot in front of the Wake Forest net. Lear saved 10 Deacon shots in the loss, while Chao stopped three NC State shots.
"Today's game was really a battle," said Wolfpack head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We have definitely come a long way against this team, because they really took it to us the last time they were here. Both teams had opportunities to score, but that's just how the game goes."
"This is an especially tough loss for us because we know that we have fought so hard and come so far this season."
The pairings for the ACC Tournament will be announced on Oct. 31.
