Wolfpack Women Face Texas in ACC/Big XII Challenge

Today's Contest:
Today's matchup is the second game of the ACC/BigXII
Challenge and will be nationally televised on ESPN2. Beth Mowins will handle
play-by-play duites with Nancy Lieberman-Cline serving as color analyst.
This will be the fifth time these two programs have met on the hardwood.. The Longhorns hold a 3-1 advantage in the series. Texas won the last meeting between these two teams with a 72-63 victory over NC State on March 22, 1990 in the NCAA Midwest Regional Seminfinals.
This matchup features two All-Americans in Summer Erb and Edwina Brown and two Hall of Fame coaches in Kay Yow and Jody Conradt. The two combine for over 1,300 career wins.
Scouting Texas:
The Longhorns, a member of the Big XII Conference, has a rich women's basketball
tradition. Texas is led by All-American Edwina Brown who averages 22.4 points and
8.1 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Asha Hill also records double figures with
10.1 points per outing.
Texas averages 42.9 percent from the floor while allowing opponents 40.4 percent. The Longhorns outrebound opponents by an average of five boards per contest.

The Coaches:
Head Coach Kay Yow is entering her silver anniversary
season on the Wolfpack bench. She has a 526-216 record in her 24 years at NC State
and a 583-235 overall collegiate coaching mark. One of the most successful coaches
in the country, she currently ranks fifth in career wins.
Jody Conradt stands at the top of the all-time career wins mark with a 737-227 overall career record. She owns a 620-165 mark as the head coach at Texas.
Last Time Out:
NC State downed #9 Duke 80-75 in overtime Thursday
night in Reynolds Coliseum behind Amy Simpson*s career-high 26 points. Summer
Erb posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Texas fell to #25 Oklahoma 76-73 Wednesday night in Austin despite Edwina Brown's 22 points. Alisha Sare came off the bench to contribute 20 points for the Longhorns.

perennial power Tennessee.
Snapping Shooting Slump
After three consecutive games of season low shooting
(39.3% vs. Maryland, 37.3% vs. Clemson and 33.3% vs. Virginia), NC State responded
with a season-high 51.7% in a 80-75 overtime win over Duke on Thursday.
Rebounding Machine
Kaayla Chones has shown early in her career that she is a force to be
reckoned with on the boards. The 6-3 freshman is averaging 8.6 rebounds per outing,
which ranks third in the ACC. She had a career-high 20 rebounds against #9 North
Carolina Jan. 3 at Chapel Hill. That matches the third highest total of rebounds in
a single game in school history. Six times this season Chones has recorded double-digit
rebounds. Thanks to Chones and teammate Summer Erb (8.0 rpg), the Wolfpack Women have
outrebounded opponents in 14 of its 17 games this season.
Free Throw Queen
Not many center's lead their team in free throw percentage, but Summer
Erb does. She averages 83.6 from the charity stripe and has hit 18 straight free
throws. She hit two free throws with 13 seconds remaining in overtime to seal a
80-75 win over #9 Duke.
Double-doubles
Three different players have recorded a total of 11 double-doubles this year
for NC State. Summer Erb has 17 career double doubles and Tynesha Lewis has 10.

Freshmen Records
Wolfpack rookies Kaayla Chones and Terah James are already climbing the charts
of the freshmen record book only halfway through the season.
Chones currently has 147 rebounds which ranks ninth in the freshman record book for boards in a season. The freshman record for rebounds in a season stands at 272 by Genia Beasley. Her current scoring average of 12.4 would place her in the sixth spot and her field goal percentage of 58.6% ranks third.
James has 65 assists so far on the season which ranks her tied for seventh. The record for assists by a freshman is held by Angie Armstrong with 136.
Amy Simpson*s 17 three-pointers ranks her sixth on the freshman charts for treys.
