The Wolfpack led only 38-34 with 14:52 left in the game, but Drake could manage only eight points the rest of the way against N.C. State's smothering post defense.
Drake (1-2) hit on only 37 percent (18-of-49) of its shots, and had only three attempts on the free throw line, hitting two.
The Wolfpack (4-0) also struggled on the offensive end much of the game, hitting 41.5 percent (22-of-53) from the field. N.C. State shooters made only 1-of-10 three-point shots.
Drake took an early 7-6 lead before N.C. State responded with a 13-5 run to take control of the game.
But after leading 29-21 at halftime, the Wolfpack saw Drake creep back into within four points. Carla Bennett hit two jumpers to key a 9-4 Drake run.
Stephanie Schmitz scored 12 points to lead Drake. Bennett finished with 8 points.
Wolfpack center Summer Erb, the 1998 player of the year in the Atlantic Coast Conference, was held to seven points but did pull down nine rebounds.
