NC State Wins Wolfpack Women Tournament

NC State (3-0) led by as many as 17 points in the first half before the Spartans went on a 9-2 run to trim the lead to 40-30 at halftime. The Wolfpack outscored UNCG (1-2) 23-9 to open the second half and never looked back. NC State led by an many as 27 in the second half.
"I thought this was a good test for us today. UNCG is a good team that is well coached," commented NC State coach Kay Yow. "We moved the ball well and made some great passes."
NC State shot 44.8 percent from the floor while holding UNC Greensboro to 33 percent. The Wolfpack held a 41-35 advantage on the boards.
Wolfpack guard Tynesha Lewis also posted a double-double, contributing 12 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Summer Erb added 12 points and six rebounds while junior Monica Bates scored 12 points on four three-pointers and dished out a game-high four assists.
But is was Kaayla Chones who did most of the damage for the Wolfpack. Her 19 points were a game-high and her career high. She hit nine of 12 shots from the floor. In addition to her 10 rebounds, she also contributed three steals, two blocked shots and an assist.
"Kaayla really had a great tournament. She had a double-double again today, which is impressive considering both of those performances came in games where she played 22 and 24 minutes respectively," said Yow.
Chones was named tournament MVP with teammates Tynesha Lewis and Summer Erb joining her on the all-tournament team. Washington's Loree Payne, Southern Miss' Arnika Hughes and UNCG's Melinda Goodson rounded out the all-tourney team.
NC State will spend the Thanksgiving holidays in Cancun, Mexico where they will face Drake on Friday, Nov. 26 and Kansas State on Sat., Nov. 27.
