Three from @PackWrestle Advance to NCAA Semifinals and Clinch All-Americans Honors

Three All-Americans Tie School Record, Jack and Renda go for Honor Tonight

CLEVELAND, OHIO – A redshirt-senior and pair of redshirt-freshmen all won their quarterfinal matches and not only advance to tonight semifinals, but also secure All-American honors for NC State at the 2018 NCAA Championships.
Â
Michael Macchiavello (197 pounds) scored a takedown in the final seconds and secured his first All-American honors, he was one win away last season.
Â
Rookies Tariq Wilson (133) and Hayden Hidlay (157) also became All-Americans in their first seasons of action, Wilson advanced with a major decision over the #4 seed while Hidlay won a close bout with the matches' lone takedown.

In addition to those three, NC State can also have two more secure All-American honors with a win tonight, Kevin Jack at 141 pounds and Pete Renda at 184 pounds.

As a team, NC State remains in fifth place.

133: Match #346 - Tariq Wilson vs. #4 seed Kaid Brock (Oklahoma St.)
• R-Fr. Tariq Wilson was the first to advance to the semifinals, as he scored a 12-3 major decision over #4 seed Brock of Oklahoma State. Wilson stuck the first takedown, then scored a second in the first period with a four-point near fall and led 8-3 after the opening period. After giving up an escape, Wilson scored a third takedown in the second and added a two-point near fall in the period to go up 12-4. After the ride time point was added, Wilson secured the major with a 13-5 win. Wilson avenged a 16-1 tech fall to Brock in the dual in Italy.

• #1 seed R-Fr. Hayden Hidlay made it two Pack rookies in a row to clinch All-American honors and advance to the semifinals with a 3-2 win over #8 seed Berger of Nebraska. Hidlay scored a takedown in the first period and went into the third tied 3-3. An escape point to start the third proved to be the match winner. Hidlay earlier defeated Berger in the dual at Nebraska, 6-3.

• #4 seed R-Sr. Pete Renda fell in overtime to #5 seed Abounader of Michigan, 11-9. After a scoreless first, the action picked up. Abounader started the second with a reversal, a two-point near fall and another reversal to take a 6-1 lead. Renda's escape at the end of the second narrowed the gap to 6-4. Renda then started the third with an escape and his own takedown and jumped out to a 7-6 lead, but Abounader's reversal made it his lead at 8-7, but he was called for locked hands and the bout was even 8-8. Renda got called for his second stall, before his escape extended OT at 9-9. A third stall forced Renda to give up the escape and he could not get a late takedown.

197: Match #374 - #4 seed Michael Macchiavello vs. #5 seed Shakur Rasheed (Penn St.)
• #4 seed R-Sr. Michael Macchiavello was the third from NC State to clinch a birth into tonight's semifinals, as he scored the winning takedown with 12 seconds left and defeated #5 seed Rasheed of Penn State 5-4. Rasheed struck first with a takedown and was up 3-1 early in the second after a takedown and escape. Macchiavello even the bout 3-3 with a reversal and got the ride time to under a minute. Rasheed started the third down and went up 4-3 with his escape, but Macchiavello scored the winning takedown in the final moments.
