CLEVELAND, OHIO – The opening round of the 2018 NCAA Championships saw NC State advance eight of its nine wrestlers to tonight's second round at the 2018 NCAA Championships in Cleveland. In addition to the eight Pack wins, NC State had four bonus point wins and after Session 1 was in fifth place with 12 team points.

FIRST ROUND RECAP
Starting the tournament in dramatic fashion for NC State was R-Jr. Sean Fausz going into overtime, but the #5 seed at 125 pounds scored the win to move into the second round. Fausz started with a 3-0 lead in the second, but ODU's McGee worked his way to a 5-4 lead before Fausz escaped with 10 seconds left to go into extra time. In the extra time, Fausz scored an escape, then a takedown and a ride out for the 8-5 win.

In his first trip to the NCAA Championships, R-Fr. Tariq Wilson scored the Pack's biggest upset win of the first round as he took out the #5 seeded Erneste of Missouri 8-3 and an impressive 4:54 of ride time. The first period saw Wilson score two takedowns for a 5-3 lead. Wilson then chose top to start the second and rode Erneste the entire period to amass 3:02 of RT. Wilson scored another takedown in the third and scored the win in his home state of Ohio.

R-Sr. Beau Donahue also needed extra time, but scored the winning takedown in extra time to advance over Wisconsin's Martin. The bout was 1-1 after regulation and 2-2 after three rounds of extra time. Donahue then scored a takedown 25 seconds into the fourth OT period for the 4-2 win. Donahue is the #14 seed at 149 pounds.

At 174 pounds, R-Fr. Daniel Bullard fell in OT to #14 seed Majias of Oklahoma, 6-4.

After giving up the first takedown in his bout, #4 seed R-Sr. Pete Renda dominated the rest of his first bout at 184 pounds for a 9-2 win over Oklahoma State's Moore. Renda scored a takedown in each period and came away with the win.

In was then back-to-back bonus points for NC State to close out Session 1.

#4 seed at 197 pounds, R-Sr. Michael Macchiavello build a 11-4 lead heading into the third, and a late reversal secured the bonus point, a 13-4 major decision, over Cal Poly's Lane.

#14 seed heavyweight Sr. Michael Boykin got a first period pin. Boykin started strong with a takedown and four-point near fall in the first 20 seconds, then he turned hi again and got the pin at the 0:53 mark over Eastern Michigan's Hutchison.
