RALEIGH, N.C. - Four members of the Wolfpack Olympic Regional Training Center will be heading to Iowa City, Iowa, this weekend to compete at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in freestyle wrestling. The winner in each of the six weight classes this weekend will advance and compete for the U.S. at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in August.
After he just completed his collegiate eligibility with a third straight NCAA Finals appearance, Nick Gwiazdowski takes the next step in his career looking for a spot in the Olympics. Gwiazdowski advanced to the trials by winning the Bill Farrell Memorial Tournament in New York back in November, and he enters this weekend as the No. 3 seed at 125 kg/275 pounds.
Current NC State assistant coaches Adam Hall and Obe Blanc will also both be in action this weekend. Hall will be wrestling in his second Olympic Trials, as he placed fifth in 2012. Hall qualified for this year's trials with a fifth place finish at the U.S. National Olympic Trials Qualifier in the 74 kg/163 pound weight class.
Blanc will be competing in the 57 kg/125.5 pound weight class. A two-time USA World Team member, Blanc qualified for the trials last weekend when he claimed the top spot at the Last Chance Trials Qualifier.
Another former NC State wrestler, Quinton Godley, will also be competing at the trails. A 2012 NC State grad, Godley spent a couple of seasons as a full-time assistant at Campbell before joining the Wolfpack Olympic Regional Training Center. He will join Hall in the 74 kg/163 pound weight class after his sixth place finish at the U.S. National Olympic Trials Qualifier.
The 125 kg weight class will be competing on Saturday, while 57 kg and 74 kg takes place on Sunday. Preliminaries start at 9 a.m. (CT), and the Best two of three Championship Series take place at 6-9 p.m. (CT).
