RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State's Nick Gwiazdowski traveled to New York this weekend, and came away with medalist honors in the freestyle 125kg weight class at the Bill Farrell Memorial Tournament.
Two-time NCAA champion Nick Gwiazdowski won a tight battle of the big men over 2009 Junior World champion Dom Bradley. Gwiazdowski earned a 1-0 victory over Bradley courtesy of a shot clock point.
"It's a good confidence booster because now I'm qualified for the Olympic Trials. I'm still going to wrestle this college season and hope to win a third national championship. That's a match I got back from third place at the Trials," said Gwiazdowski.
The Bill Farrell International served as a qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials to be held in Iowa City, Iowa on April 9-10 of next year. The highest placing USA athlete winning a medal that has yet to qualify earned a spot in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.
With the win, Gwiazdowski has now secured his spots in the Trials field.
Full tourney results:
4-2 decision over Justin Grant
11-6 decision over Pavel Krivtsov (2x Russian world junior team member)
11-0 tech fall over Tony Nelson (2x NCAA Champ)
1-0 decision over Dom Bradley (4x US world team member)
In all, six wrestlers that train at the Wolfpack Training Center competed this weekend. First-year assistant coach Adam Hall placed fourth at 74 kg.
