Volunteer Assistant

Stephen Furst is in his seventh year as a volunteer assistant with the NC State track and cross country program. Teaching by example, Furst works with the middle distance and distance student-athletes by assisting with the implementation of the daily training regiment. Furst continues to train and compete as a post-collegiate athlete who achieved a personal best at 5,000m in 2011 of 13:29.05 at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational. Most recently, Furst competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials at 5,000m. He has been selected for various U.S. teams that competed at international events, most recently competing for team USA at the 2011 Pan Am Games at 5,000m.

During his time in a Wolfpack uniform, Furst was an All-American at 5,000m and ACC Conference champion at 5,000m and 10,000m during the 2008 outdoor track and field season. Additionally, he won the 2008 Penn Relays title at 5,000m.

A native of Goshen, N.Y., Furst graduated from NC State in 2007 in aerospace engineering and completed his master's degree in mechanical engineering the following year. Furst earned a NCAA postgraduate scholarship in the spring of 2008. Currently, Furst is pursuing his PhD in mechanical engineering which requires him to split time between the U.S. and Germany.
