Chris Coleman is entering his 16th season as an assistant coach with the NC State Track & Field program. Coleman, a three-time NCAA Division II National Champion for St. Augustine's College and a member of the Division II Hall of Fame, coaches the Wolfpack's jumpers.
Coleman started guiding Mariama Hunt in the fall of 2024. In her first outdoor season, she became the first female jumper at NC State under Coleman to qualify for the NCAA Championships. She placed 12th at the NCAA East Regional with a 6.11m jump in the long jump. She earned Second Team All-ACC honors with a fourth-place finish in the long jump at the ACC Championships.
Coleman coached high jumper Christopher Garrick to two All-ACC honors in 2017. The sophomore earned fourth-place finishes at both conference meets, including a personal-best clearance of 7’ 0.5” (2.15m) at the ACC Indoor Championships. Garrick and JaTory Reid also each earned All-ACC honors during the 2017-18 indoor season.
Coleman guided Jonathan Addison, one of the greatest men’s long jumpers in NC State history, to four All-America honors and three ACC individual titles from 2014-16. Addison demolished the program’s indoor long jump record with a mark of 26’ 9.75” (8.17m) in 2016. He followed that performance with a silver medal finish at the 2016 NCAA Indoor National Championships, making a leap of 26’ 0.25” (7.93m).
On the women’s side, Alexis Perry stood out for Coleman from 2015-16, as she claimed two All-American honors and one ACC title in the long jump. Her collegiate-best jump of 21’ 6.75” (6.57m), recorded at the 2016 Virginia Challenge, set an all-time NC State record. Perry ended her collegiate career with a fourth-place finish in the long jump at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Addison and Perry shined for Coleman in 2015 as the duo collectively boasted three All-American honors, two ACC titles, and six All-ACC honors in the jumping events. Addison was named the 2015 ACC Indoor MVP after placing first in the high jump, second in the long jump and fourth in the 60m dash.
In 2014, Coleman coached Addison to his first individual long jump title at the ACC Outdoor Championships, earning him a spot on the 2014 All-ACC Outdoor team. Addison’s personal-best jump of 25' 4.75" (7.74m) in the NCAA East Regional earned him a ticket to the Outdoor NCAA Championships, where he finished 20th overall.
Coleman produced perhaps the greatest single-season performer in the women's horizontal jumps in not only NC State, but ACC history as well in Karimah Shepherd in 2013. Shepherd earned four combined All-America nods (two indoor and two outdoor) in the women's long jump and triple jumps between both seasons, was named the 2013 ACC Outdoor Field Performer of the Year, and the South Region's Field Athlete of the Year for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Shepherd broke the school record in the women's long jump with a 21’ 2” (6.45m) leap, en route to winning the ACC indoor crown in the event. After claiming the women's triple jump title at the ACC Indoor Championships, Shepherd was named the ACC Indoor Championships' Field MVP.
Coleman also coached Kris Kornegay-Gober and Lacey Shuman to All-ACC performances in the men's and women's high jumps during the 2013 outdoor season. Kornegay-Gober concluded his career as the school-record holder in the indoor high jump (7' 4.25" / 2.24m) and a five-time All-ACC performer.
The 2012 season saw Coleman help Shepherd, who qualified for the 2011 NCAA East Regional, earn All-ACC accolades after finishing third in the long jump at the 2012 ACC Indoor Championships.
In 2010, Lawson had another stellar season under Coleman, achieving All-ACC honors in the indoor high jump for the second consecutive year, as well as provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships. During the outdoor season, Lawson tied for first place at the NCAA East Regional meet, advancing to the NCAA Championships. Coleman also helped Kristopher Kornegay-Gober achieve All-ACC honors in the high jump during both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
In 2009, Coleman coached Lamont Savage (indoor long jump) and Kayla Lawson (indoor high jump) to All-ACC honors. Savage was an outdoor NCAA regional qualifier.
In his first year with the Pack (2007), Coleman coached men's ACC outdoor champion and national qualifier Dexter Adams (long jump) and regional qualifier DeMiracle Washington on the women's team. In his second year, Adams and Washington furthered their success, with Adams winning the long jump at ACC Indoors, earning All-America honors, qualifying for the NCAA Championships and competing in the U.S. Olympic Trials. Washington won the women's long jump title at the 2008 ACC Indoor Championships and was a national qualifier.
At St. Augustine's, Coleman claimed three triple jump national titles (1994 Indoor, 1995 Indoor, 1995 Outdoor) and was named conference MVP in back-to-back seasons (1994-95). Coleman was a member of two indoor national championship teams in 1992 and 1995 and four outdoor national championships in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995. He was a staggering 14-time Division II All-American in the long and triple jump.
Upon graduation in 1996, he became an assistant jump coach for Coach George Williams at St. Augustine's College. He has coached several collegiate All-Americans and national champions in the jumps. He has also coached several high school and youth All-Americans.
Coleman is the founder and head coach of the Carolina Allstars Youth Track & Field Team in Fuquay-Varina, N.C. He is a native of Fuquay-Varina now residing in Raleigh with his two daughters, Takira and Jordyn.
