John Portland joined NC State Athletics in June 2015, as the Associate AD for Facilities and Operations. Portland has over 10 years’ experience managing facilities and event operations. At NC State, Portland will oversee the management of NC State’s athletic facilities, game management, championships and special events.
Prior to his arrival at NC State, Portland served as Assistant Athletics Director for Facilities and Operations at Georgia Tech where he managed all athletics facilities and events for the Yellow Jackets while serving as the point of contact for emergency management and construction projects.
Portland joined GT from Georgia State, where he served as Senior Associate AD for Internal Affairs/CFO after being elevated from Assistant AD for Facilities and Operations. He helped start the football program at Georgia State and the transition from an FCS program to an FBS program and joining the Sun Belt Conference. He managed at $26 million dollar budget, oversaw numerous facility improvement projects and assisted in development of the master plan.
Before moving to Atlanta, he was the Assistant Director of Operations at the University of Central Florida. Portland also worked at Rollins College as the Director of Operations and was an intern at Florida Citrus Sports where he assisted game operations for the Capital One and Champs Sports Bowls.
A native of State College, PA, Portland graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a degree in business and masters in higher education. Portland and his wife Lisa have a son, JP (born 2010) and daughters Delaney (born 2012) and Ellie (born 2015).
